This BeYou fact sheet explains that bullying is often hidden and can affect children or young people who are perceived as “different" (for example because of their background, identity, appearance, disability or being new). It lists common signs of bullying — such as a drop in school attendance or engagement, changes in friendships, belongings being lost or damaged, social exclusion or ignoring, a child avoiding parts of school, appearing anxious or upset especially around certain peers, or showing signs like torn clothes or unexplained injuries. Because most bullying happens out of sight of adults, the sheet encourages educators (and others) to watch for such changes, ask gently about a child's wellbeing, and — if concerned — raise the issue with school wellbeing or support staff, or implement supportive measures (like buddy systems)
